Requiem for Columbus malls

Here’s an interesting look back at Columbus’s once mighty four malls:

The malls: Eastland, Westland, Southland and the once incredibly busy Northland were the kinds of places shoppers had only dreamed about before they were built. And through the 70s & 80s (and well into the 90s for all but Southland) they made money hand over fist.

Let me mourn Northland for a moment. Gone, gone, gone. What was once the busiest mall in Columbus, is now an empty parking lot.

Gone with the hogshead cask and demijohn….

Yep. When Glimcher was whining about how Easton and Polaris was putting them out of business, I smiled and remembered how Northland sucked the life out of Northern Lights and Graceland. Today Graceland is being completely redeveloped and looks like it will be a good place again. Someday the former Northland site will be put to better use as well. At least we can hope that’s the case.

Don’t forget that City Center was a destination mall for a decade or so as well. Looks like it died this week too.

Yep, it’s the Circle of Life for malls.
