4.2 billion for CheckFree

Online banking/bill-paying company CheckFree was sold for a whopping $4.2 billion dollars today. I hadn’t realized, but the company was founded in Dublin, Ohio, though it’s been headquartered in Atlanta for some time now. 900 people still work at their Dublin offices.

I’m a MyCheckFree customer, and up until they got rid of the ability to pay off credit cards earlier this year, the service was pretty damn convenient. Now, not so much. And I’ve found that online check-writing through regular banks is awful. I used BankOne’s, now Chase’s, online service once and probably won’t do so again. To get a payment to my landlord on the first, they withheld the money two weeks in advance! That’s not helping me- they’re helping themselves.

Banks clearly aren’t feeling much in the way of competitive heat or they’d work harder to improve these things.

I really, really have not enjoyed My Check Free at all. I’ve actually stopped shopping with places that use it exclusively (like Old Navy).

Really? I thought it was cool. What I like most about it was that all my bills showed up in one place and I could easily see this one’s due in three days, two more next week….

But as I said, with no CCs in there anymore, it’s lost that. I’ve only got gas and electric in it now. It would be easier to set up an auto-deduct with those two, like I have for the cell and cable.

I’m a CheckFree customer and been one for years. I absolutely love it.
The primitive exercise of bill stuffing in envelopes just had to go. Never had any snags so far.
