Susan Purtee reactions

Here’s a pdf of Mayor Mike Coleman’s request for a review of CPD officer Susan Purtee’s behavior. It’s at 10TV News’s site.

Meanwhile, Purtee has been given desk duty:

On Tuesday, the department confirmed that Purtee was reassigned to a non-enforcement position until an Internal Affairs administrative investigation is completed.

There’s video at that link, where Maureen Kocot, who originally broke the story, interviews the mayor, who says:

“I was appalled. I was offended, both as an African American, but also as a mayor.”

Ann Fisher has a good column in the Dispatch:

Columbus Police Officer Susan L. Purtee can be as racist, bigoted and hateful as she wants. No law against that.

But would you want to watch her back while she’s patrolling neighborhoods? Would you want her watching yours?

And has the YouTube broadcast of videotapes depicting her views inflamed stereotypes and, therefore, harmed the ability of the police force to do its job?

This debacle, by the way, will not do anything to help the force’s flagging minority-recruitment program.

That last bit is a good point (my post on that here.)

The ADL has called for an investigation.

And the story has gone somewhat global- rather unfortunately for Columbus and Ohio- as the Guardian picks up the AP article.

(Previous post: The Columbus cop and the Jews.)

UPDATE: Jill Miller Zimon has a roundup here as well.

You probably saw this but I posted a list last night of ’round the Internet takes on the situation. Of note are those that the viewpoints are examples of being honest about how people really feel. Here’s the link if folks are interested:

Susan Purtee’s need to be fired on the spot. As a ex police officer I find her rasict and anti semetic comments to be both distasteful and plain offensive. fire her now.

Purtee has as much right to her beliefs and to continue working as a cop as a Hispanic
member of La Raza [The Race] does. Purtee has as much right as a cop that identifies himself with the Nation of Islam [
    There are many].

Purtee has as much right as a Jewish cop and member of the ADL.

If all the above can associate themselves with the beliefs of these organizations and still be trusted
to perform their jobs in an equitable manner, then so can Purtee.

Mr Maynard - I don’t live in Columbus. Can you tell me, does the police dept there actually employ members of La Raza and the ADL?

Also - you should have felt free to provide a link to one of the websites to which you contribute, like this one - http://www.whitealert.com/.

    I always do.

The real intolerance and hate here is expressed by people like Mark, who apparently believes people should be fired from their jobs simply because they he disagrees with their politics, regardless of how well the person does the job. This is what used to be done in the old Soviet Union, and illustrates the Communist origin of political correctness. And we wonder why America has become so universally hated. Add political correctness to our military imperialism, corporate predation, and cultural pollution, and the justification for America’s existence begins to become questionable. The growing witch-hunt against Susan Purtee makes me ashamed to be an American, and makes me repent of my military service to this country.

In a recent article the Columbus Disgrace, posted a front page ariticle about how MS. Purtee was initally rejected for the position as a Columbus police officer then continued to lay waste to her reputation as to every reason why she should not be one, and comes to the point of almost blaming Larry H. James for hiring her anyways, what they forget is that Ms. Purtee served 16 years as a fine example of Columbus’s finest that she served her job and the people of Columbus well for those 16 years, for I am sure has she not that information too would have been brought to light. What one comes away with is that MS. Purtee is nothing more than another victim of the modern day witch hunt that we call political correctness. That her only crime is violating the diginty of the moral minority through her use of Freedom of speech.

You can certainly see the effects of modern day media. If it isn’t politically correct then you shouldn’t be saying it. Forget that troublesome 1st Amendment thing it’s outdated. Were going to be a dictatorship now and you are only allowed to think what we tell you to think. That applies particularly to you if you happen to be white.

I found this board because I was about to rail on the topic on another board and I had to look up this broad’s name. Sure enough, I found this one.

My thoughts on some of the commentary here:
“If all the above can associate themselves with the beliefs of these organizations and still be trusted to perform their jobs in an equitable manner, then so can Purtee.”

Mr. Maynard, that’s a big “if.” What if she perjured herself in cases involving Jewish or black defendants because of her bias? That is supposedly one of the things they’re focusing on in this investigation.
    ——-
“What one comes away with is that MS. Purtee is nothing more than another victim of the modern day witch hunt that we call political correctness. That her only crime is violating the diginty of the moral minority through her use of Freedom of speech.”

Mr. Lott, I agree with you to a point. There is a lot of P.C. bulls*it that gets on my damn nerves. BUT, let’s be honest with ourselves. This probably wouldn’t matter as much if she were a regular person. Say, a business owner. You might not do business with her again, or you may agree to disagree. However, she is a police officer supposedly serving the public trust.

Yes, as you say, she has served 16 years on the force, probably without incident before? How do you, or I, or anyone else know how her views have or have not affected how she does her job? True, that is a grey area. What if it is found she lied under oath (as I mention above) in a court case involving a black or Jewish defendant? Can she be trusted on the street? Can she be trusted not to gun down an unarmed black teenager like that a*shole in Cincinnati did a few years back? She obviously feels contempt toward certain segments of the population she has sworn to protect? If she keeps her job, fine. Keep her at a desk, and not where she can potentially pervert justice.
    ———-
“Were going to be a dictatorship now and you are only allowed to think what we tell you to think. That applies particularly to you if you happen to be white.”

And that b*tch thinks Jews and blacks are the problem? What is this? Oh boo-hoo, “CaucasianNation.” I don’t think the police are paid to be footsoldiers for white supremacy. I’m in the journalism business, pal, so don’t give me that “First Amendment is outdated” bulls*it. I’m a firm believer in the First Amendment, and I also believe it’s misused. She has every right to say whatever the hell she wants, but she also must realize there are consequences.

You tell your boss to f*ck off, be ready to lose your job. Drop an N-bomb on a black guy, and be ready to get your a*s kicked. There is a responsibility that comes with the First Amendment. Can anyone be sure this officer can serve the public, when she obviously thinks a good chunk of the public is scum?

Not that I expect you to care. The dry cleaner called. Your hood and sheets are starched and ready.

I know I am late a comer to this story, but I accidentally discovered Susan Purtee’s radio show which lead back to all of this (on Voice of Reason)…I truly hope that the CPD has upheld its standards and stuck a fork in this dingbats job, cause she should obviously be done.

Being a Police Officer (which I consider a “special” job; one that requires very high moral standards and a very patient and tolerant mind) is a privilege, not a right. And with that right comes the responsibility to maintain a high standard of character. And yes, this includes not spouting racist banter. Sorry all you free speech advocates (one can say what ever they want, but not every job has to tolerate it). I am pretty sure that when one enters this field of work (much like when one becomes a physician, or a firefighter, etc…) they take a code of conduct oath, and I should only hope that actions like these are against the grain of that oath.

Columbus Police Department! Please give that job to someone who does not hate half of the population.

And Officer Susan Purtee (#850), stop being a weirdo. There are too many things in this world that could benefit from your energy. Why waste it on hate?
